Non Nobis Solum
Salvete! Mihi nomen est Magistra McIntire. I am a Latin teacher currently in Philadelphia, but I grew up in Fredericksburg at the Riverbend High School Latin program. I will be teaching OVID-22 this year- more on that later. My pronouns are she/they, and here are some things about me! Recently I've enjoyed...
Latin Academy is such a special time. As a student, Latin Academy was where I decided to pursue Latin (although I didn't know it yet). Nothing compared to being surrounded by the people most passionate about Latin, but I still didn't think I could do Latin in college where there were all these other Latin geniuses. That changed when Magister Yates (as RA Yates) told the Academy that we didn't have to be the fastest person on the Certamen team or score the highest on the VJCL Grammar test to be a good Latin teacher. That changed my life! So know that you are able. You have been CHOSEN for Academy. You are adding something to the Academy. You are not alone in this. Non nobis solum. Looking forward to meeting you all and creating an Academy to remember. Curate, Magistra McIntire

Less than a month! I’m super excited! In college, working at Latin Academy as an RA was always one of my favorite parts of the year. Now I have this amazing opportunity to come back and teach the spoken Latin course Latīna Loquenda. But I'll post more about that soon. Today I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, so you can get to know me a little better. My name is David Yates, or rather Magister Yates. I'm a former Latin teacher of ten years. I started my teaching career in Loudoun County where I grew up. A few years after, I moved down to Spotsylvania County and got married! Now for the past couple of years my job has been taking care of a big awesome kiddo. It’s been wonderful! We do so much together, but she especially loves reading, drawing, going through the car wash, building Kiwi Crates, and of course playing. One of her favorite games right now is playing Zombie, in which I either chase her around the house for her brains, or we fight off evil humans and cook up their brains for lunch. You know, as any good Zombie family should. When I get some time to myself, I enjoy working on house projects, all things Latin, and watching sci-fi and fantasy shows, especially Doctor Who, LOTR, and the MCU. I can’t wait to meet you all! Latin Academy is truly a wonderful experience, which I know you’re going to love. Until then, however, I hope you are able to relax and enjoy some much deserved time off from the school year. mihi nomen est magister Cavedo. This summer I will be teaching a class at Academy called mysterium colorum. I will post again soon with a description of the course as well as some good documentaries you can stream ahead of academy if you are interested in the "mystery of colors" but in this post I just wanted to introduce myself and why I'm so excited to return to Academy in person this year.
I grew up in Richmond and went to the University of Mary Washington and taught middle school Latin in Spotsylvania but these days I live in Metro Atlanta where I teach upper school Latin at the Westminster Schools. I have an old dog named Aura as well as a young cat named Lorenzo (il Magnifico) and I recently adopted an older cat named Crissy who was in need of re-homing. I also just purchased my first home and all of the animals are adjusting well to life at our new villa suburbana. Latin Academy is probably my favorite thing in the world. This will be my thirteenth summer as an instructor and each year it just keeps getting better. It has been hard to have had to hold Academy remotely the past two summers and it will also be hard to come back in person away from home for three weeks (I haven't even left home in two years!). But it will be so worth it and we will all be in this together. I hope the end of your school year goes well and I look forward to meeting each of you soon. Keep checking back for more updates including more information on mysterium colorum, coming soon! ex animo, Cavedo It’s wild that we are only a month and a half away from Academy! This is truly one of my favorite parts of the year. So you can know me a bit better, I am the Latin and World Mythology teacher at Brookville High School in Lynchburg, Virginia. I love nearly all the nerdy things including: the MCU (ask me my favorite superhero and you will get an essay), anime, Star Wars, video games, books, reality tv, kdramas, etc. I also have recently gotten into gardening and crocheting, so I got that early-onset elderly status too.
I will being teaching a course on ancient Greek rituals and co-directing the play, Miles Gloriosus, with the marvelous Magistra McIntire. Speaking of the play, audition! The play is one of the biggest parts of GLA, so I encourage you to participate to the fullest degree! If you have theater experience or just like doing fun things, the play is the place for you. Try a speaking part and maybe you will be Pyrgopolinices, our vain and cowardly lead, or Philocomasium, a clever trickster who constantly wrecks the men and tricks them to be with her boyfriend. Maybe if speaking in front of audiences isn’t your thing, take a silent comedic role. WE HAVE OPTIONS. If you are nervous about never having acted before, it’s okay; I actually have only been in a play once and it was at GLA when I was a student. You could also play in the ~super cool~ GLA pit orchestra; just bring your instrument and any sheet music you have. All are welcome and there is something for everyone! Below are my two assistants, Skadi and Baloo. Unfortunately, they cannot accompany me to GLA. It is a real shame too because they could have given great acting tips on how to pretend like they haven't been fed dinner. There may be brief periods of mourning my best buddies, so please bring pictures of your pets for me to see while I wait to be reunited with them. Valete, Magistra Blanks Salvete Omnes! My name is Jacquelyn Wilkins and I am returning as director of the GLA for the sixth year. I am so excited to report that the staff for this year's (in person) academy has been assembled and has started planning an amazing experience. Behind the scenes, I have forms to update and this website to refurbish, which I will do with the help of my 5 assistants: Psyche, Eirene, Amber, Oberon, and Loki. They are very helpful. :) As you begin to use this site, please do not hesitate to contact me at the email in the sidebar for help. Over the next few weeks and months before academy, the teachers and RA's will use this space to introduce themselves, share information about their classes and electives, and their insights about what you should expect and what you should bring. Along those lines, there are checklists and links in the right hand sidebar to help you prepare. I hope your school year ends well and I can't wait to start academy with your help!
