You have (hopefully) read my email by now with information on how to access the packet and the forms you need to fill out. If you haven't received it yet, please let me know ASAP. I'm really enjoying the memes you're sending me! :)
I wanted to give you some further information on the schedule for this summer and how everything will work, so I made this screencast to walk you through everything.
It's only seven minutes and I think it'll be really helpful in giving you an idea of what our two weeks together will look like. Ut semper, please email me if you have any questions!
Welcome to the Latin Academy!
Dear 2020 Latin Academy Student,
Salve! You have been selected as one of the forty-five participants in the thirty-third Governor’s Latin Academy (GLA). The Academy faculty extends congratulations and greetings to you!
Enclosed is information specific to the Latin Academy for you and your parents to read and discuss together. This year is unprecedented because GLA will be occurring online. We are all disappointed that we won't get to be together in person, but the staff is excited to still have the opportunity to provide you with Latin enrichment this summer! The program will be a blend of synchronous and asynchronous activities (about 30%, 70% respectively). You should expect to spend 1-2 hours every weekday on GLA activities.
Each staff member is preparing a pre-recorded lesson for you to watch asynchronously. Topics of these lessons will include magical women in mythology, Latin puns and word puzzles, and the monuments of Rome. You will then have the chance to engage with and reflect on the content of that lesson by answering your choice of discussion questions posted by the teacher of that lesson. You will have the option to type up your responses, record your responses, or attend a live discussion on Zoom. You will also be working in a group to reflect on this year’s theme, “nil humani alienum,” before watching a lecture from a staff member on his reflections on the theme. Though all of this won't be the typical GLA experience, we are confident that you will enjoy it!
Please complete the participant survey by 11:59 pm on May 23 to help the staff plan a Latin Academy that will be challenging and enjoyable for you. You also need to submit the electronic signature form by May 23.
On behalf of the Latin Academy staff, let me again say how eager we are to (virtually) meet you and to get started. Please check out our blog over the coming weeks for more information on everything we will be doing. Do not hesitate to contact me by e-mail with questions about any of the enclosed materials. Best wishes as the end of your school year approaches!
Cura ut valeas,
Director, Governor’s Latin Academy
