Quisquis Amat Valeat
When was the last time you received a letter? Or wrote one? Do you know how much a stamp costs? Soon, you will become very familiar with the process of writing, sealing, and mailing your own letters to send to friends and family during your time at Academy. And in Stylus Amicitiae, you will become familiar with them in antiquity as well.
We will explore the genre of Epistles aka letters aka epistulas by reading a selection of letters from authors such as Cicero, Pliny the Younger, Fronto, and a few in between. While reading through these letters, we will consider the point of publishing or sending them and whether or not we can determine some of the letters we read as private versus public when analyzing the Quis/Quid/Quomodo/Ubi/Cur of these authors. We will also take some look at the history of letters in the ancient world through texts and archaeology to then use to help us place the purpose of these “published” letters in the history of Rome and its provinces. QUOQUE while doing this, we will be practicing our composition skills with the purpose of, perhaps, you writing your own letter tantum Latine. I am so so so excited to see you at academy in less than a week - get ready for a time in your life like no other. Curate ut valeatis, Magistra Harrell
