Dies Quintus - Studia, Conventus cum Academia Iaponica, Latina Loquenda, et Artes: Figlina6/27/2024 Welcome back to your daily edition of the GLA MMXXIV Blog and buckle in for the ride because today's is a long post! Hodie was yet another dies filled with lectures - Voces Feminarum, Stylus Amicitiae, and Quid Rides? - from our fantastic magistri. Before we get into the round-ups: during breakfast something big happened… Arleigh’s pseudo-Fanta recipe (Starry and Orange Gatorade) spread to new mouths! Philip, Isadora, Kaitlyn, Mackenzie, and Grayson tried the “Fanta” for the first time. The Academy has officially entered a fizzy-drink frenzy!
In addition to the Fanta frenzy, Eshwar and our RA Benji had a full-on badminton and basketball battle during Otium Verum, where Eshwar ultimately came out victorious. Congratulations to Eshwar! In Voces Feminarum, we read fragments of Erinna’s Distaff and discussed how it related to Sappho’s poetry we read in last class. We extended the discussion to women’s roles in Greek culture and society, Iphigenia and Clytemnestra’s actions from Iphigenia, and Dido and Anna’s actions in the Aeneid that seemed to mirror the Greek women’s behavior. In Stylus Amicitiae, we read three letters from an Academy-favorite author: Cicero! The famous orator’s epistulae entered and were warmly welcomed by us students. We discussed letters he sent to Atticus that talked about the imminent fall of the Republic after Caesar’s death, a letter he sent to his sick freedman Tiro telling him to take care of his health, and another letter to Atticus talking about advice he gave to a soon-to-be-married man. He also invited Atticus to his birthday party! In our last class Quid Rides?, we went over our Plautus translations from last time and Magistris Primis McIntire introduced a new type of humor: Argutiae, or wordplay! Magistris showed us an incredibly funny video as an example of wordplay and we translated new excerpts of texts that describe Argutiae. Today’s special activity was a collaboration with the Japanese Academy students who are also at R-MC with us! We introduced ourselves in our languages and the admission staff of the college prepared a Jeopardy-style R-MC trivia for all students to play. Maximas gratias to the Japanese Academy students and the R-MC admission staff! Our penultimate activity of the day was Latina Loquenda to polish our Latin-speaking skills. Everyone was doing their best to analyze and continuously improve their spoken Latin. Optime, discipuli! To end the day, we stepped away from the lingua Latina and dipped our fingers into clay-molding and UV-resin-ing figures that we would use for Mercatus, which will occur at the end of academy. Everyone was hyper-focused on their creations, and they turned out extremely well-made! We had a long day today, but a fun one nonetheless. We are super excited to return tomorrow to Ancient Greek, Roman Art, and Mercatus after a three-day hiatus. GLA Out of Context: “Coquette?” “That’s not Boudicca, that’s Booty-ca.” Arleigh’s Fanta Furies: Dies Quintus: 6 Total: 21 Iocus Diei (the return of joke of the day!): “Did you hear about the cheese factory in Paris that exploded? De brie was everywhere.” Today’s joke submitted by Isadora. Valete, Ciara and Philip (Your True Aediles)
