Dies Quartus: Virginia Capitol, Maymont Park, and Iphigenia (1977)

Salvete, omnes! Our fourth day of Academy was a hectic one, but we were still happy to visit Richmond and watch our first pictura movens (moving picture), Iphigenia.

We started our day with a trip to the Virginia state capitol building, where we received a tour and learned about Jefferson’s ancient Rome-inspired architecture. We got to view historically accurate Roman-style columns, statues, and domes. We also got to learn about what has occurred in the capitol building in modern times, which was a welcome digression from our usual ancient studies. On the bus, Arleigh had an accident with his pseudo-Fanta Starry and Orange Gatorade drink and sprayed it all over himself, Philip, Reesey, and Mackenzie. The four of us were in a sticky situation for a while.

In the afternoon, we headed to Maymont Park in Richmond and had lunch while talking about what we had learned at the capitol building. It was sweltering outside (almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit!), but we had plenty of water and shade. It was nice to relax and decompress after an early departure from Randolph-Macon.

When we returned from Richmond, we had some much-needed otium (free time) in our dorms before heading to dinner. While we were at dinner, it started pouring rain, which conveniently got us in the mood to curl up and watch a movie - which is exactly what we did. Iphigenia is a 1977 Greek film by director Michael Cacoyannis. It tells the story of Iphigenia, a daughter of Agamemnon who was sacrificed at the altar to appease the gods during the Trojan war. A tragedy, it was entertaining from beginning to end - both the story and the creative direction were extremely interesting.

We’ve had a long day, but it was a great one! Our first field trip and movie night went as smoothly as they could and we’re excited to get back to our classes tomorrow morning.

GLA Out of Context:
“Just because I prefer Jo March over Amy March doesn’t mean anything.”
“We’re like 10% plastic, we might as well keep eating it.”
“She’s almond mom maxxing.”

Arleigh’s Fanta Furies:
Dies Quartus: 5
Total: 15

Valete,
